Leicester City striker, Jamie Vardy has been named the Football writers’ Association Footballer of the Year. The prolific English striker won with due to a vote of 36 percent as entered by 290 journalists. The player won the award ahead of team mates, Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante.
The 29-year old striker has scored 22 premier league goals this season including netting in a league record 11 games in a row. Leicester City need just two points to ensure they lift the trophy if their closest rival, Tottenham lose to Chelsea on Monday.
José Mourinho has praised goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for his display against Chelsea, who are his parent club, in the Champions League semi-final. The Belgian goalkeeper is currently playing for Atletico Madrid and he has done so for the last three years. Since moving to Chelsea in 2011, he has not played a game for the blues.
However, he has racked up more than 150 appearances for Atletico during this period. Courtois is now widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He has been a major reason behind Atletico staying unbeaten in the competition this season.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has praised the attitude and skill of striker Demba Ba by saying that he reminded him of former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, who is considered a legend in these parts.
Demba Ba scored the second goal in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Paris St Germain. This goal helped the blues reach the Champions League semi-final at the expense of PSG. Chelsea are in danger of missing out on the competition’s latter stages despite having secured the opening goal in the match through Andre Schurrle. Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has praised the manager Rafa Benitez by saying that he has done an extremely good job. Benitez managed to guide Chelsea to their first ever Europa league triumph, as the London club beat Benfica 2-1 in the final of the competition.
Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic were the centre back partnership in the match due to the absence of captain John Terry. Benitez was given the objective of finishing in the top four and possibly winning a title when he took over from Roberto di Matteo at the end of November.
The Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez has hit back at the claims from the Chelsea fans that he doesn’t know what he is doing by saying that the changes he made at half-time clearly showed that is not the case.
Chelsea were losing 1-0 in the match against Brentford in the fourth round of the FA Cup. This led to the angry chants from the Chelsea fans towards the interim manager Benitez. In response to the poor performance from the team in the first half, Benitez made the change by bringing in the Spaniard Juan Mata in place of the German Marko Marin.
